We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Gyertson to Maranatha High School! Dr. Gyertson brings substantial executive leadership experience to his new role at Maranatha having been President of three Christian Universities – Regent University (Virginia), Asbury University (Kentucky) and Taylor University (Indiana). Most recently Dr. Gyertson has served as Distinguished Professor of Leadership Formation and Renewal working with Doctoral students in the School of Education as well as the School of Business and Leadership at Regent University in Virginia. Dr. Gyertson has also served as a Senior Fellow with the Engstrom Institute of the Christian Leadership Alliance (Azusa, CA) with a special research and consulting focus in Executive Leadership for Nonprofit organizations. He serves as a Senior Fellow for the Council for Christian Colleges and University (Washington, D.C.). He has a broad and varied background in education, publishing, consulting, executive coaching, ministry and media.
Dr. Gyertson holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University with a concentration in education administration and management. He is also an ordained minister having served senior pastoral positions in Methodist and Presbyterian churches. Dr. Gyertson is published in the fields of applied theology, colonial and church history, education and leadership studies. Among his published works is “Faithful Stewards: Board Governance Principles and Practices for Faith-Based Nonprofits” (CareNet 2009). His book chapter “Christian Leadership and the Identity and Mission of an Organization” was published in “Christian Leadership Essentials” (B & H Publishers 2011). Dr. Gyertson was the senior editor for “Nonprofit Leadership in a For-Profit World” (Standard Publishing 2011). He was also the creator and Executive Editor for the twenty volume curriculum series “Living By the Book” jointly published by CBN Publishing and Zondervan Publishing.
Dr. Michelle Purghart is in her 21st year in education, with fourteen years experience in senior administration, including nine as High School Principal. Dr. Michelle Purghart is in her 3rd year as Principal of Maranatha, and continues to work with faculty and staff to improve each program. Dr. Purghart’s love of curriculum, instruction and assessment has been evidenced in her involvement with accreditation, course content development, and academic counseling. She has served as the Curriculum Committee Chair for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, as well as trained principals and vice-principals in data analysis, teacher evaluation, and curriculum development. Dr. Purghart pursued a teaching credential in English and Kinesiology at McGill University in Montreal, and immediately thereafter completed her Master’s of Education in Curriculum and Instruction at USD (University of San Diego). She received her second teaching credential in California for English and Physical Education. After years of teaching and administration, Dr. Purghart completed a doctorate at UCI/UCLA in Educational Leadership. Her dissertation determined the effects of various instructional methodologies on student learning and retention. Dr. Michelle Purghart also holds both the Tier 1 & Tier 2 Administrative credentials. Dr. Purghart has been a presenter at various conferences, consulted for various private institutions, and served as Chair for a number of accreditation teams. Her love for the Lord Jesus Christ has brought her to Maranatha, and she loves the community atmosphere that she believes sets Maranatha apart from other schools in the area.
Chief Finance and Operations Officer
Kris Dreyer has 27 years experience in Finance, Operations, Facility Management and full P & L responsibility. Kris has experience in profit and non-profit sectors and is skilled in acquisitions, consolidations, development, marketing, and admissions. Kris has held positions as the Director of Operations for Desert Christian Academy, the Business Manager for Tri-City Christian School, the Director of Operations for Magna International, as well as the CEO/COO of Santa Barbara Charter School. Kris has over 13 years experience with philanthropic organizations, ministries, and academic institutions as a founder, board member, committee member and volunteer. He is a graduate of Belfour University as well as Harvard Business School, Business Management Certification Graduate Program.
